Diggins Wins Women’s 20 km Mass Start – Incredible Finish to the Race
The victory in the women’s freestyle 20 km mass start was resolved in an incredible battle between four skiers. American Jessie Diggins won the race with an impressive final sprint.
“It was a big surprise, but I’ll take it”, commented Diggins of her win shortly after the race.
Swedish skier Jonna Sundling secured second place, battling the American star for the lead right to the very last meters.
The final podium spot went to Norwegian Heidi Weng. Weng appeared to position herself well in the final climb, but Diggins and Sundling surged ahead between the two Norwegians.
Therese Johaug led the race heading into the final climb towards the stadium, but the Norwegian, making her return to the World Cup in Ruka, ultimately faded to fourth place.
Krista Pärmäkoski finished as the best Finnish skier in 23rd place.
