Sunday’s ski jumping competition suspended after the first round – Andreas Wellinger victorious

Difficult winds headlined Sunday’s FIS Ski Jumping competition. Conditions affected the competition and jump lengths throughout the afternoon, and many of the anticipated top jumpers were left to bottom positions. 

The winds grew stronger in the second round, and the competition was ultimately suspended halfway through it.

Germany’s Andreas Wellinger took the win with a 146,5 meter leap that left second-placed Austrian Stefan Kraft behind with over 5 points. Wellinger’s fellow German Karl Geiger took third place with an elegant 136,5-meter jump.

Slovenian Timi Zajc who jumped 146 meters on Saturday was left outside the top 30, when his jump carried only under 99,5 meters. After Halvor Egner Granerud and Michael Hayboeck struggled to jump over 70 meters, the competition took a short break. Starting gate was lifted three times in the first round, but varying conditions continued to affect the competition and jumpers.

Like on Saturday, the competition ended with German and Austrian celebrations. Estonia’s Artti Aigro was the outsider of the day and placed 5th in the end.
