Jonna Sundling takes the Women’s 20k Mass Start Free
Jonna Sundling wins the women’s 20k Mass Start Free in the really icy conditions of Ruka Nordic Sunday. Multiple women fell over in the first downhill of the race and the whole track was super slippery after the rain fell the night before the race.
Jessica Diggins came from behind to take second in the last few kilometers showing that she will be a threat throughout the season. Heidi Weng came through as well in the final hill to claim third.

– It was really cool, it was really scary with all the ice, said Diggins after what will be her last ever race at Ruka.
The Swedes led the way for the majority of the race but after Diggins and Weng came to take the podium, the Women’s 10km Interval Start Classic winner Frida Karlsson was left fourth and Ebba Andersson fifth. The other Swedes Moa Ilar and Maja Dahlqvist were left eighth and ninth.
Karoline Simpson-Larsen and Nora Sanness from Norway came through in sixth and seventh. That means the top nine was made up of five Swedes, three Norwegians and Jessica Diggins.
After an action packed opening weekend in the Women’s Cross-Country World Cup the overall standings are as follows.
- Jessie Diggins – 252 points
- Moa Ilar – 227 points
- Jonna Sundling – 213 points
- Frida Karlsson – 212 points
- Heidi Weng – 203 points
